Are you missing one or more teeth? Are you looking for a way to fill those gaps? Traditional crowns, bridges, and dentures have their place, but no restoration compares to dental implants. Implants can resolve tooth loss issues permanently. Getting dental implants, however, is a process that can take up to six months to complete. You can learn more about this process at Pleasant Hill Dental in Pleasant Hill, California.
Your implant dentist, Dr. Cheng Zhu, performs implant treatment in stages for patients to complete the process of getting implants. These stages include:
Through a pre-surgical evaluation, Dr. Zhu can determine whether you’re a good candidate for implants. This evaluation involves reviewing your medical history, assessing your oral health, taking x-rays of your teeth, checking your jawbone density, making impressions of your mouth, deciding how many implants to get, and a myriad of details for preparing your replacement teeth (crown, implant bridge or implant-supported dentures).
Implant surgery is done under anesthesia, so you feel no pain during the procedure. Dr. Zhu will make an incision in your gum, insert the implant post(s) into your jawbone, and stitch the incision to help it heal. Then, we’ll wait for the implant(s) to fuse with your bone system, which could take six months. When the fusing process is complete, Dr. Zhu will attach an abutment to hold your restoration and wait for it to heal. Finally, your restoration (crown, bridge, or dentures) is attached to finalize your treatment.
After surgery, we’ll schedule follow-up visits to monitor your recovery. These check-ups ensure the implants are healing properly. With a 98% success rate, the chances of post-surgery problems are minimal. You may experience minor pain or discomfort after implant surgery. These symptoms are temporary and can be managed with OTC medication.
